Question: Talk About The Australia Had To Consider Interpretation? Answer: Introducation For this situation the government court of Australia needed to think about the translation of the obligation of care and determination which the executives owe toward their organizations under the arrangements of area 180(1) of the Corporation Act 2001 (Cth) (CA). The appointed authorities for this situation needed to decide if two executives who were additionally the main investors of the organization can be held at risk for giving hindering money related counsel to the customers of the organization according to segment 180(1) of the CA. For this situation Storm Financial Limited (Storm) were the litigants and the Australian Securities and Investment Commission were the offended party. Tempest held an Australian monetary administrations permit and enjoyed offering budgetary types of assistance to customers based on a model which had been created by one of its chiefs. The model given to acquiring of the customers against the value they had in their homes, so they could get an edge ad vance using such assets so as to make an interest in file assets alongside the foundation of a money reserve[1]. The court needed to decide if such activities reveled into by the executives accounted to the penetrate of obligation under Section 180(1) of the CA[2]. Material law The significant law which was pertinent comparable to this case is Section 180(1) of the CA. As per the segment an executive or some other official of the organization needs to release their obligations and utilize their forces through the use of suitable degree of care and perseverance which would have been actualized by a sensible individual in the event that they were in the shoes of the chiefs or officials of the organization. The segment further peruses that for the contradiction of this area common punishments recommended by segment 1317E of the CA are applicable[3]. Entries made by the gatherings The chiefs of Storm made an accommodation under the steady gaze of the court that the model utilized by the organization was suitable and the repudiations made by the organization couldn't be predicted by a sensible individual. The different accommodation made by them on this issue comprised that the organization that numerous experts which included legal counselors and money related consultants had been exhorted by the organization. It was additionally put together by the organization that they had been exposed to survey by ASIC, Compliance experts alongside its non official executives. Dependence was additionally made b y the chiefs to the way that during the ten years of its history the money related list off the organization had never fallen. It was additionally put together by them that the main genuine explanation behind the disappointment of the model was the Black Swan occasion in particular GFC. Anyway it was not asserted by the ASIC that there was a blemish in the model uti lized by the organization on the off chance that it could have been considered as forceful. The accommodation made by the ASIC identified with repudiation identified with the model just to the degree it incorporated a specific class of individuals. The ASIC presented that the obligation under 180(1) was penetrated by storm. It was given by the ASIC that the obligations had been penetrated by the executives when the organization was dissolvable, the two chiefs were the main investors and chiefs of the organization and there was no question corresponding to the administration. Different issues which were decreed by the court according to this case are whether a genuine break with respect to the executives was expected to repudiate the arrangements of segment 180. The case made by ASIC depended on the way that the executives had really penetrated the arrangements of the CA as a venturing stone towards segment 1801(1). The court communicated that there was not kidding question on the accommodation that a real break was obligatory to establish the repudiation of area 180(1) anyway the procedures of the courts have been done on this premise. In this manner the accommodation of the ASIC had been dismissed by the court which expressed that the real break by chiefs was important to negate area 180(1) of the CA. It was put together by the executives of tempest that the obligations existing under segment 180(1) were exclusively owed to the organization. To the opposite it was put together by the ASIC that the a standard of lead is endorsed by the s180(1) which is not the same as the advantage of the enterprise so the obligation reaches out to the world on the loose. The entries of the chiefs had been acknowledged by the court, anyway it noticed that the enthusiasm of the company must not be deciphered in a limited way and consequently should not be confined to the enthusiasm of the investors alone and what's more money related misfortunes as well as considered as misfortunes for the partnership. It was what's more put together by the chief that an executive who is the main proprietor of the organization isn't subject to the repudiation of area 180(1) of the CA. the premise of the accommodation was that the investors and the chiefs have the sole option to decide the hazard the partnership should take so as to make benefits. The chiefs presented that sole coordinates can't penetrate segment 180(1) as it is inferred that the confirmation of the demonstration should be possible by the executives where they are the main investors. The accommodation of the executives comparable to this point had been dismissed by the court. The court according to the accommodation decided that such accommodation can't be upheld according to the wordings and setting of s180 (1) of the CA, and therefore couldn't be approved. Acts which are not consistence with the CA might be approved by the investors yet they have no capacity to sanction them. Choice of the court: It was found by the court that executives of tempest had negated the obligation owed by them under segment 180(1) of the CA. The declaration of the court depended on the way that a sensible executive in similar conditions would have known that the areas of the CA would be contradicted in the given circumstance and would bring adverse ramifications for the organization. The test as gave by segment 180 (1) of CA was applied by the court to decide if sensible consideration had been practiced by the executives corresponding to the release of their obligations. it was given by the court that so as to appropriately actualize the test all conditions identified with the cases must be mulled over which incorporated the anticipate capacity of the danger of mischief as for the enthusiasm of the organization, the level of the damage the advantages emerging out of the executives direct and the weight forced on the organization to alleviate the predictable damage. It was found by the court that the Corporation Act had been penetrated by the executives of tempest as they offered budgetary types of assistance in agreement to the model in setting to customers of a powerless classification which had been featured by the ASIC and this can be said in light of the fact that: A chief who might have acted sensibly in similar conditions which the organization was in, alongside considering the obligations of the current executives of tempest would have had the information that all things considered, the areas of the CA would be penetrated in the event that the person in question utilized their forces to allow or cause the model gave by tempest to be made appropriate on the customers who were argued in class by the ASIC and explicitly those financial specialists who approached retirement or resigned with restricted resources and pay. It was given by the court that the penetrate which the organization was asserted with was predictable as well as any sensible executive in the spot of the current chiefs would have considered them as in all likelihood. It was additionally broke down by the court that the lead which the chiefs enjoyed was a solitary break of every one of their obligations and very few penetrates predictable with the tally of financial specialists who made up the classes of powerless speculators. It was additionally yielded by the ASIC that just one penetrate had been made by both the executives. It was considered by the court that despite the fact that the chiefs acted truly, and had an authentic perspectives that truly held the view that capital misfortune would never happen with list support interest in the Storm model, it would not be workable for them to sidestep the risk under segment 1317s of the CA as they had critical tasks to carry out in the organization alongside reality of repudiations of the tempests. The issue of risk had just been managed so far by the appointed authorities corresponding to this case and further procedures would be held so as to decide the liabilities of the chiefs. The case connoted that the chiefs of the organization which is dissolvable and where they are just investors are at risk to penetrate the obligation of care and tirelessness if their activities contradict the arrangements of CA. It is additionally given by segment 136(3) that an extraordinary goals would not have any impact if the constitution of the organization has a further necessity which must be fulfilled so as to change or cancelation the term. What's more segment 136(3) states that the further necessity as portrayed in 136(3) can likewise be changed however just if the prerequisite is gone along with[5]. The price elasticity of demand ad supply
IntroductionThe rule of snap help to see how the market functions. Versatility changes among stocks since some productsA might be increasingly irreplaceable to the shopper. Stocks that are necessities are progressively coldhearted toward money related worth changes since buyers would continue buying these stocks in spite of financial worth augmentations Conversely, a fiscal worth expansion of a decent or administration that is viewed as to a lesser extent a need will demoralize more shoppers in light of the fact that the possibility cost of buying the product will go too much high. Once in a while a worry requests to hold a decent idea of what bit of an interest bend resembles in the event that it is to do acceptable judgments. Assume you are the owner of Rick ââ¬Ës Pizza. You are sing raising the fiscal qualities by 10 for each centum, and you wonder how the buyers will react and what will go on to the grosss? The answer relies upon how customers will respond. Will they cut back b uys a little or a cluster? ( Robert Schenk, 2007 ) . In my conclusion I think it ââ¬Ës extremely of import to locate the money related worth snap of interest. It help us to comprehend the market all the more unmistakably what's more accomplish all the more precisely and proficient estimating conclusions in given clasp of period.PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMANDPrice snap of interest gauges the result of money related worth adjustments onA measure requested. People groups will buy more merchandise at a lower money related qualities and buy less products at a higher fiscal qualities. For representation, individuals may buy a few supports or a few groups of socks at a bargain then again of just a support. A person with a higher pay is thought to hold higher financial worth snap, since he can bear to pass more. Be that as it may, even a customer with low fiscal worth snap is regularly ready to pay higher financial qualities if there is an appeal of products. . ( Tricia Ellis-Christensen and O. Wallace, 2010 ) . Request stays invariable in vindictiveness of high fiscal qualities in the status of no substitution. It ââ¬Ës other than valid for gasolene and H2O which have a couple or no substitutions. request was in this manner thought about inelastic. Regularly, rivalry in the commercial center keeps money related qualities lower and increasingly adaptable. Nonexclusive reciprocals of specific focuses have brought down the interest for exchange name focuses, in this manner take bringing down their financial worth. . ( Tricia Ellis-Christensen and O. Wallace, 2010 ) .Elasticity of interest can be measured and be outlined in an expression:Elasticity of interest The more delicate customers are to financial worth, the bigger in the fiscal worth snap of interest. As it were, a bigger money related worth snap of interest demonstrates a product whose request is increasingly flexible. In the transient interest is typically progressively inelastic on the grounds that it takes clasp to happen choices. The fiscal worth snap of interest will be utilized to figure marketing financial worth that augments the overall gains of the organization. + Demand is versatile if an adjustment in money related worth prompts a greater % change sought after, the fiscal worth snap of interest will subsequently be more prominent than 1. The undermentioned highlights of merchandise which are flexible will in general hold They are extravagance merchandise They are costly and a huge per centum of income. For outline, athleticss automobiles and get-aways Merchandise with numerous substitutions and an extremely competitory market. For representation if Simsbury ââ¬Ës set up the financial estimation of its staff of life there are numerous choices, so individuals would be extremely delicate to the money related worth They are purchased regularly + Demand is inelastic if a modification in financial worth prompts a littler % adjustment popular ; the money related worth snap of interest will subsequently be under 1. Products which are inelastic will in general hold a few or the entirety of the undermentioned attributes: They have not many or no nearby substitutions, for delineation: gas, final resting place nails. They are necessities They are propensity shaping They cost a little for every centum of salary or are purchased rarely Request is unitary versatile if an adjustment in money related worth have no outcome to a change popular ; the fiscal worth snap of interest will be 1. ( Tricia Ellis-Christensen and O. Wallace, 2010 ) . There are many factor act uponing the money related worth snap of interest: 1. Number of close substitutions inside the market: The more ( and closer ) potential substitutions accessible in the market the more flexible interest will be in light of a modification in financial worth. In this example, the change outcome will be fairly solid. 2. Level of extravagances or necessities: extravagance products and enterprises will in general hold more noteworthy snap while necessities will in general be increasingly inelastic. 3. Level of salary spent on a decent: stocks requiring a bigger piece of the purchaser ââ¬Ës pay will in general hold more prominent snap. 4. Propensity sorting out merchandise â⬠Goods, for example, final resting place nails and medications will in general be inelastic sought after. They have constantly devoured and have a little outcome on the fiscal worth adjustments. 5. Timespan viable â⬠Demand will in general be increasingly versatile in the long count since customers have more clasp to set their conduct to the money related worth changes ( 2007 ) .PRICE ELASTICITY OF SUPPLYPrice snap of gracefully gauges the outcome of financial worth adjustments onA measure provided. People groups will offer more merchandise at a higher financial qualities and offer more products at a lower money related qualities. The articulation for the money related worth snap of gracefully is: Flexibility of gracefully = Percentage modification in measure provided/Percentage adjustment in financial worth ( Mike Moffatt, 2009 ) . Elements that Affect Price Elasticity of Supply: + Spare creation limit In the event that there is plentifulness of trim limit so a worry ought to have the option to build its finished result without an ascent in costs and henceforth flexibly will be versatile in light of a change sought after. The flexibly of merchandise and enterprises is as often as possible generally versatile in a downturn, when there is plentifulness of trim work and capital assets accessible to step up final result as the financial framework recoups. + Stocks of completed stocks and constituents In the event that loads of normal stuffs and completed stocks are at a high degree so a house can respond to a modification sought after quickly by giving these stocks onto the market â⬠gracefully will be flexible and slightness versa. + The effortlessness and cost of factor change In the event that both capital and work assets are occupationally itinerant so the snap of flexibly for a product is higher than if capital and work can non simple and quickly be exchanged + Time period associated with the creation technique Flexibly is increasingly financial worth versatile the more extended the clasp time frame that a house is permitted to set its creation degrees ( 2007 ) .MARKETS AND ADJUSTMENT OVER TIMEPrice viewpoints and guess:Look at two diagrams above, we can see that money related qualities ever transform, they do non stay at the equivalent. They can go up or descend. Because of money related qualities be given to adjust in the great beyond, it will affect on the interest and gracefully now. For delineation, it is presently, iPhone 3GS have only look, you are accepting of buying another iPhone 3GS, you may to decide to hold up until the fiscal estimation of iPhone 3GS harvest time to some degree when iPhone 4G is sold available. On the different manus, if the fiscal estimation of iPhone 3GS descend in the short count, you may great buy it now since they dread that the money related worth will hold gone up by so. At the point when individuals accept that the money related worth will go up, it ma kes them buy presently, interestingly, when individuals accept that the fiscal worth will descend, it makes them pause. For advertiser, in the event that they are accepting of selling their stocks, while money related qualities are falling, they will want to sell it each piece in no time as could be expected under the circumstances. On the different manus, if money related qualities are lifting a tiny bit at a time, they will want to keep up it each piece long as conceivable so as to obtain the best financial worth. Along these lines a conviction that the money related worth will go up or descend will do individuals to sell or pause. Conjecture is the conduct of investigating money related an incentive in the great beyond and affecting buying and promoting conclusions dependent on their anticipations. Estimate is applied in numerous business sectors, for example, the stock trade, the outside trade showcase, the gold market and the housing market, ECT. Blending to John Sloman, speculation can either support to chop down financial worth vacillations or do them get more regrettable: it tends to be balancing out or destabilizing.Stabilizing guess:When suppliers and demanders accept that a change in money related worth happens only in short count, surmise wil will in general hold a settling result on fiscal worth variances. For case, an expansion sought after is the ground why financial worth ascent. In the diagram above, request has moved from D1 to D2. Harmony has moved from guide a toward B, fiscal worth has expanded from P1 to P2. People groups accept that money related worth will lift only in temporary, before financial worth fall again, suppliers put up their merchandise for sale to the public at this point. In this way removals from S1 to S2. Interestingly, demanders will hold up until fiscal worth falls again. Request removals from D2 to D3. The harmony moves to show degree Celsius, and fiscal worth tumbling to P3. ( Sloman 2007, p69 )Destabilizing guess:When suppliers and demanders accept that a change in financial worth standpoints comparative modifications to come, speculation will be given to hold a destabilizing result on money related worth vacillations. For representation, an expansion popular is the ground why the money related worth lifts. In the diagram, request bend has moved from D1 to D2, money related worth has ascended from P1 to P2. In this clasp, money related worth have will in general lift, suppliers need to hold up until the financial worth ascent further. In this way, flexibly moves from S1 to S2. Who Needs Harvard
âWho Needs Harvardâ Posted on August 13 on TIME.com: Who Needs Harvard? Competition for the Ivies is as fierce as ever, but kids who look beyond the famous schools may be the smartest applicants of all http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1226150-1,00.html Yet another article de-emphasizing the importance of attending the famous schools. This one features our Dean of Admissions: In a kind of virtuous circle, the second tier schools got better as applications rose and they could become choosier in assembling a classwhich in turn raised the quality of the whole experience on campus and made the school more attractive to both topflight professors and the next wave of applicants. Just because you havent heard of a college doesnt mean its no good, argues Marilee Jones, the admissions dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an outspoken advocate of the idea that parents need to lighten up. Just as youve changed and grown since college, colleges are changing and growing. So, current MIT students, when you made up your college list, did you apply to the most prestigious schools you thought you had a chance of getting into, or ones that better suited your personality? To be honest, during my interview for MIT, my interviewer was pretty surprised at the range of colleges that I was applying to. They didnt really have anything in common except for being prestigious and having either a good pre-med program or engineering curriculum In hindsight, my decision-making process was flawed, though I know I ended up right where I belonged. Ill never forget people?Æ'?s surprise when I told them I was applying to Wellesley and Yale. But I thought you wanted to study engineering???, they would ask. Well, maybe biology or neuroscience! I would respond (I wasnt sure exactly what I wanted to study at that point.) When youre going on college campus tours, keep your eyes open. I went on very few tours, though I did tour MIT, and I think I was focused on the wrong things. Being the daughter of two architects, I looked at the buildings, the location, and the strength of the engineering and biology programs. What I should have also paid attention to was the school newspaper, the postings on the bulletin boards, and even the general expression on the students?Æ'? faces. Did they seem happy? What sort of activities happened on campus? Were there more fliers for poetry readings, physics conferences, or keg parties? The best is to chat with random students and hear about what they study, do for fun, and love (or hate) about their schools. Or, sit in the cafeteria and listen to people?Æ'?s conversations. Yes, it?Æ'?s a little creepy, but you may learn a lot. There was a great poster in the Infinite corridor last year called ?Æ'?Things overheard in the Infinite,?Æ'? where people would write down random clips of conversations. It was amazing to see the range of topics that people talk about. You?Æ'?re going to spend four very challenging years no matter what school you go to, make sure you?Æ'?re committing yourself to the right one. Every school has its own personality, especially MIT, where you?Æ'?re more likely to see someone wearing a cape than a popped collar.

The Importance Of The Renaissance And Why Is It Important
What is the Renaissance and Why is it Important? ââ¬Å"In Discussion: The Renaissanceâ⬠ââ¬Å"What a piece of work is a man! . . . in form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel.â⬠ââ¬âWilliam Shakespeare, from Hamlet. At the core of Pater s study of the Renaissance lies the maxim l art pour l art, or art for art s sake. Originally championed by nineteenth-century French aesthetes, this notion of art as an end in itself helped shape Pater s conception of a life dedicated to aesthetic appreciation. In Pater s view the importance of the Renaissance, as of all culture, lies in its power to stimulate the human spirit, to inspire the individual to make the most of his or her life. By establishing a critical relationship with the Renaissance that is in many ways deeply personal, Pater in essence makes it his own and reshapes it according to his own unique interpretations( Pater). Annoted Bibliography Outline
Question: Discuss that outline of annotated bibliography is a synthesized paper? Answer: Introduction Thesis Statement The outline of annotated bibliography is a synthesized paper that will be made in order to express the details of the three articles. The information from the three articles was used as resources for construction of the outline (Lilienfeld et al., 2012). The information that will be included in the paper is the identification of the common themes of the three articles and the construction of a conclusion statement which is common to all the three articles (Odom, Boyd Williams, 2012). The three articles are viewed as a single entity. The three articles have tried to identify the personality traits of leaders (Bezdjian, Tuvblad, Raine Baker, 2011). Discussion 1. The first article " Fearless dominance and the U.S. presidency: Implications of psychopathic personality traits for successful and unsuccessful political leadership. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology." a.) The first article has tried to identify the psychopathic personality traits. i. The major personality types that bear key influence on the political leadership are considered as the successful traits. The traits include interpersonal dominance, venturesomeness and persuasiveness. These traits help the leaders to acquire the political power that results in successful leadership (Edens, Buffington Tomicic, 2000). ii. The article has identified the disorders that differentiate leaders from the psychopaths. For this purpose, factor analysis of PPI (Psychopathic Personality inventory) has been conducted in a community that reflects the higher order dimensions of fearless dominance and impulsive ant sociality. The personality traits that affect the performance at job and leadership have been examined with a sample that comprises of individuals with unsuccessful behaviors and successful behaviors. 121 recruited experts were studied for this study and a 596 items questionnaire was completed to study the personality. The article discussed the NEO revised inventory personality and its relation to the psychopathic traits (Lilienfeld et al., 2012). 2. The second article - "Leadership styles and associated personality traits: Support for the conceptualisation of transactional and transformational leadership. South African Journal of Psychology." a.) The article provides a description of the various styles of leadership which includes transactional style of leadership, transformational style of leadership and the laissez faire style of leadership. The transformational leaders possess a charismatic personality that influences and stimulates the followers. Transactional leaders tend to involve a social change process and the followers are a part of the entire process. They receive rewards or punishments on the basis of the commitment. A passive leader lacks leadership and the style is followed for self management (Bezdjian, Tuvblad, Raine Baker, 2011). b.) The association of the behavioral styles with the type of leadership has been found. An intervention has been conducted to analyze the impact of management style on the performance of the team and the organization. The results from the assessment have been analyzed. It has identified the differences in the personality traits of managers in various segments of the business (van Eeden, Cilliers van Deventer, 2008). 3.) Article 3 - "Impact of Personal Growth Projects on Leadership Identity Development. Journal of Leadership Education." a.) The article has identified the impact of leadership program on the personal growth of an individual. The various programs on leadership tend to imbibe positive growth on the personality. The PGP programs increases the self awareness, self confidence and the interpersonal efficiency. b.) The various instructional strategies tend to develop the self awareness, interpersonal efficiency, self confidence and motivation among the students. The best strategy that results in greatest advantage to the development of identity of the individual has been stated. The training of leadership that will offer better results has been stated (Odom, Boyd Williams, 2012). The main theme of the three articles is to identify the personality traits that govern the leadership type. The personality traits that are related to the leadership type have been identified. The first article has emphasized on identification of the type of personality that plays a major role in the development of political leadership (Schmid, 2006). The three articles have tried to identify the major influences on the leadership styles. The three articles are based share the common information which is based on the identification of the major influences on the style of leadership. The articles have described the personality traits that are responsible for the diverse range of leadership. In this respect the personality traits of the transformational leaders and the transactional leaders has been stated. The social ethics that influence the development of the behavioral traits has been identified. The personality traits of passive leadership style have also been identified. The psyc hopathic personality trait that differentiates one leader from the other has been identified. The various dimensions that affect the personality trait have been identified via factor analysis. The behavioral traits related to psychopaths have identified the unsuccessful actions. Psychopathy has also tried to identify the traits that results in behavior that are socially successful. The three articles have identified common traits that are seen among the leaders. They are interpersonal dominance, venturesomeness, persuasiveness that results in the acquisition of political power which is necessary to become a successful leader (Schmid, 2006). The common themes of the three articles are the major personality trait that develops the leadership style. The variances in the style of leadership are a result of the influence of the training programs on the students. The successful and the unsuccessful traits results in the development of the type of leadership. The variances in the personality and behavioral traits results in the development of transactional leaders, transformational leaders and passive leaders (Moors, 2012) . Conclusion The paper includes an analysis of the various factors that leads to the development of leadership style. The purpose of the study is to synthesize a common theme behind the proposition of the articles. The main proposition of the articles has been validated with study of the personality traits of specific group. Author has also used to intervention to validate the proposition in the study. The major area of concern of the author is to identify the unsuccessful actions and successful actions that results in the development of the leadership style. From the three articles it can be said that the personality development programs plays a major role in the development of leadership traits. The style of leadership is identified by a combination of successful actions and unsuccessful actions. References Bezdjian, S., Tuvblad, C., Raine, A., Baker, L. (2011). Extra Solar Planets Essay Example For Students
Extra Solar Planets Essay Earths Beyond Earth: The Search for Other Worlds In early 1990, the firstextrasolar planet was detected, surprising everyone by its strangeness. Moreplanets have now been discovered outside our solar system than in it. Theseplanets present many great mysteries to the astronomical world. Extrasolarplanets are planets that exist outside our solar system; they are orbiting astar other than our Sun. So far, eighteen have been found, all of them defyingwell-established theories about planets and how they operate (Winters, 46). AsStephen Maran said, The new discoveries remind us that ignorance is not justbliss, it is also a lack of imagination. The newfound planets show us not onlythat a solar system is not a rare commodity, but that ours may be plainvanilla. (73) Finding extrasolar planets is both difficult and complicated. The average star, for instance, is one hundred million times brighter than anyplanet orbiting it (De Grasse Tyson, 87). Picking out a planet against theglare of a star is like trying to spot a 100-watt light bulb next to a100-billion-watt searchlight, says Michael Lemonick (54). Also, earth-sizeplanets are too small to have any significant effect on their star, so they arealmost impossible to detect (De Grasse Tyson, 88). There is, however , a way tofind extrasolar planets without using direct sight: the Doppler Effect. When astar has a planet in its gravitational field, it makes the star appear as if itis wobbling by stretching the light waves and slightly changing thestars color (Maran, 75). A second method of finding a planet is to searchthrough a disk of debris surrounding a star, such as Vega. Chances are that aplanet will exist there (De Grasse Tyson, 87). Out of the detected planets, onlya few have actually been seen, being found by accident by either theHubble Space Telescope or the Infrared Space Observatory (Lemonick, 53). Inshort, planets can only be found in a limited number of ways, and under veryspecific conditions. In general, most extrasolar planets are alike in that theyare all very odd compared to what humans are accustomed. For example, most ofthem orbit around sun-like stars no further than 100 light years from the Sun. Also, they are gas giants, almost all of them being larger than Jupiter, andhave temperatures up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit (Maran, 74). On the other hand, these planets all have very different orbital patterns; some of them have orbitsthat are extremely close to the star that they orbit, while others have oddelliptical orbits (Naeye, 45). Either way, almost all of these planets differsignificantly from the planets in our solar system. Very little specificinformation is known about most extrasolar planets, but a few have beenresearched extensively and found to have interesting characteristics. Forinstance, 51 Pegasi (all planets being named after their host stars) was thefirst extrasolar planet found, being discovered by Swiss astronomers Mayar andQueloz. This planet is half the mass of Jupiter (seventy-five times more massivethan Mercury), and has the least mass of any of the new planets (Maran, 74). Also, it is 5 million miles from its star, but still manages one orbit in only alittle more than four days (Flamsteed, 80). 70 Virginis, another odd planet, issix times the mass of Jupiter, has extreme weather conditions, and orbitselliptically (Lemonick, 53). Likewise, 47 Ursae Majoris has fierce hurricanes, and is also larger than Jupiter. The planet with the most elliptical orbit knownto man is 16 Cygni B; it travels from 56 million to 250 million miles of itssun. In contrast, 55 Cancri B is an example of a tight-orbiting planet, circlingthe sun closer than mercury is to our sun (Maran, 74). In summary, what we knowabout these planets shows that they are very diverse and strange. Thoughstrangeness may promote curiosity, a major goal in searching for extrasolarplanets is to discover one that resembles ours or possibly harbors life. Thoughstrangeness may bring curiosity, the main motive behind finding extrasolarplanets is to discover one that resembles ours or possibly harbors life ( DeGrasse Tyson, 86). The Holy Grail, says Alan Boss, an Astronomer atCarnegie Institute, is to find an extrasolar planet that is capable ofsupporting life (Lemonick, 56). However, out of the planets discovered sofar, none are thought to be compatible with life for various reasons. First, planets that orbit close to their sun are too hot for life. Second, Pulsars, stars that are most likely to host Earth-like planets, give off too much deadlyradiation. Third, elliptical planets are gaseous and unstable, being up to tentimes more massive than Jupiter. One hope for the possibility of life is if thelarge gas planets have moons like that of Jupiter. Scientists believe that thesemoons may have conditions which would be conducive to support life (Maran, 74). .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .postImageUrl , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:hover , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:visited , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:active { border:0!important; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:active , .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5d1c91b8045ed46fef66cd4c4de5a12e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Overpopulation EssayThough the chances of there being life on one of these planets is extremelyslim, we may someday detect one that is suitable. Although there has been agreat deal of speculation and optimism about these newly discovered planets, some irrational scientists still refuse to believe in their existence. In the1600s, Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for saying that there was otherworlds outside our solar system (De Grasse Tyson, 86). Todays punishment isnot nearly as harsh, but often planetary scientists are ridiculed for theirdiscoveries, because in the opinion of some scientists there is a lack ofsubstantial evidence (Maran, 75). How can we be so silly a s to assume that weare the only planetary island in a vast ocean of stars? Also, many theories arebeing eliminated by extrasolar planets, causing stubborn astronomers to becomeuneasy. One instance is the theory of a stars formation; when a star is beingmade, strong winds blow away all debris orbiting near it. The presence of largeplanets with tight orbits contradict this theory. There are also some doubtsabout the Doppler effect, in that it may simply be the result of fluctuations ofthe stars surface, and not planets at all (De Grasse Tyson, 88). Whatconstitutes most doubt, however, is the existence of Brown Dwarf Stars. BrownDwarfs are stars in elliptical orbits around other stars that do not have enoughmass for nuclear reactions in their cores (Winters, 47). They bridge thegap in mass between stars and planets, as Robert Naeye says (45), andalmost always have elliptical orbits (Winters, 46). In fact, brown dwarfs wouldexplain many of these odd planets that have been located. Thus, extrasolar planets are not only unstable in structure, but in existence as well, being doubted and contradicted just as much as supported and proven. Theextrasolar planets that have been found raise more questions, rather than givinganswers. They have shot down theories, confused speculators, and left us withpuzzle pieces that simply do not fit together, according to current theories. Atthe same time, they have opened up doors to new possibilities, expanded ourknowledge, and given us hope for life elsewhere. These new discoveries help usto realize how ignorant we are to the processes of the universe. BibliographyDe Grasse Tyson, Neil. The Search for Planets. Natural History Oct. 1997: 86-9.
